Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train dedicated to the Indian diaspora, from Bhubaneswar. The initiative aims to enhance cultural connections and offer a unique opportunity for diaspora members to explore India’s rich heritage.
Sharing the development on X, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw wrote, “Dekho Apna Desh. PM @narendramodi Ji flagged off the inaugural journey of the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special Tourist Train for the Indian diaspora.”
Earlier in the day, PM Modi addressed the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in Bhubaneswar, highlighting India’s unprecedented growth in the 21st century. He emphasized the nation’s capacity to fulfill the global demand for skilled talent and the vital role of its diaspora in enhancing India’s global stature.
“21st century India is progressing at an incredible speed and scale. For many decades to come, India will remain a country with the world’s most young and skilled population. India has the potential to fulfill the world’s demand for skilled talent,” said PM Modi.
He also expressed gratitude to the diaspora for their unwavering support, adding, “I feel very happy when I meet you all. I never forget the love and blessings I have received from you. In the last 10 years, I have met many world leaders, and they all appreciate the Indian diaspora in their respective countries. This is because of the social values you carry.”
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the delegates and highlighted the state’s cultural treasures, including classical arts like Odissi dance, intricate Pattachitra paintings, and the iconic Sambalpuri handloom fabrics.
“The state of Odisha is a holistic hub of diversified cultures and historical excellence. Odissi is one of the oldest classical dance forms of India, and the intricate art of Pattachitra continues to enchant the world,” Majhi said.
He also praised the state’s natural beauty and its historical maritime connections, emphasizing Odisha’s role in shaping India’s cultural identity.
The 18th PBD Convention, organized in partnership with the Odisha state government, is being held from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneswar. This year’s theme is “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” celebrating the vital role of the Indian diaspora in shaping a developed India.
Participants from over 50 countries have registered for the convention, which provides a platform to strengthen ties between India and its diaspora while discussing avenues for collaboration in various fields.
Upon his arrival in Bhubaneswar, PM Modi received a warm welcome from Chief Minister Majhi, Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The Pravasi Bharatiya Express and the convention reflect the government’s commitment to fostering deeper engagement with the global Indian community while showcasing the nation’s cultural and economic progress.
